The mission of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is to enforce the law of the United States. Within the DOJ, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is the agency charged with enforcing the Controlled Substances Act and other controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States.
The DEA provides a table of drug trafficking penalties for first and subsequent offenses, depending upon the quantity involved and the drug and its schedule.
The United States Sentencing Commission establishes sentencing guidelines for the federal courts. These guidelines propose a range of prison terms and fines which are generally followed when sentencing a person convicted of a federal offense. The guidelines are based on the seriousness of the offense, such as the amount of drugs or whether a weapon was involved, and the offender’s criminal history.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigates offenses ranging from international and domestic terrorism to cybercrime, organized crime and gang activity, child predators, and serial killers.
The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforces the nation’s laws regarding stocks and commodities, including insider trading, accounting fraud, and providing false or misleading information about securities and the companies that issue them.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) investigates and enforces the tax laws of the United States, including tax fraud and tax evasion and related white-collar crimes.
The federal Bureau of Prisons maintains 119 correctional institutions throughout the country and contracts with the private prison industry to operate 14 more. The Florida Department of Corrections is the third largest state prison system in the country with over 100,000 inmates incarcerated in 142 facilities statewide and another 115,000 offenders on active community supervision. The Florida Attorney General investigates and enforces various state laws related to consumer fraud, state antitrust laws, and Medicaid fraud, as well as identity theft, drug trafficking and gang activity.
The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department runs the eighth largest jail system in the country, with about 6,000 people incarcerated in six detention facilities while awaiting trial or serving up to a one-year sentence.
